SOWERBY (James). Coloured figures of English fungi or mushrooms. London, printed Ey. J. Davis, 1797-1799-1803[-1815]. 3 volumes and a supplement in 2 vol. in-folio, green half-maroquin with corners, spine decorated, gilt edges (Binding of the time). First edition of this superb work describing the mushrooms of England, illustrated with 440 plates (distributed on 436 leaves) engraved and finely colored, complete with the Supplement published 12 years after the last volume. Naturalist and illustrator, James Sowerby (1757-1822) is the author of two monumental works, Sowerby's botany, 36 volumes published in 24 years, with a text by James Edward Smith, and the Mineral Conchology of Great Britain, published in 34 years.
