DUCHESNE (Joseph). Le Pourtraict de la santé, où est au vif représentée la reigle universelle & particulière, de bien sainement & longuement vivre. Paris, Claude Morel, 1606. In-8, vellum, smooth spine, handwritten title (Binding of the time). Title, (9) ff, 591 pp, (2) ff. of table. Rare first edition of this hygienic treatise, of which a Latin edition appeared the same year, followed by several other editions. French physician and chemist Joseph Duchesne (1544-1609), sieur de la Violette, converted to Protestantism and lived for a long time in Germany and Switzerland. He returned to France in 1598 and became the ordinary physician of Henri IV. In the first chapter, he deals with the "disturbances of the mind" (emotions and feelings), and in the two following chapters, he describes in abundance all the foods and drinks that will allow the preservation of health. "And not only does the Sieur de la Violette indicate the healthy foods, but he also gives numerous recipes to accommodate them" (Vicaire): meats, fishes, poultries, vegetables, fruits, breads, wines, waters, seasonings...
