CIVILITIES IN VERSE]. - Les Contenances de la table. [Lyon], Pierre Mareschal and Bernabé Chaussart, [ca. 1503]. Small gothic in-4 of 4 ff. without signatures, first leaf decorated with an initial with floral decoration on a black background and typographical mark of the printers, 19th century red jansenist morocco, spine ribbed, inner border, gilt edges (Lortic).
Very rare edition of this opuscule which had a great success, since its first publication around 1485.
It is the second of the five Lyon editions cited by Baudrier. The printers of this booklet, Pierre Mareschal and Barnabé Chaussard, were active in Lyon from 1493 to 1515.
According to Pierre Bérès, who described the 1850 reprint (20 copies) and quoted the Bancel catalog, this is "the first essay on civility in French" (Cat. Nourritures, n° 37).
This collection of educational and moral precepts in verse is addressed to children of all social conditions: it is made up of 37 quatrains and a ballad. It contains in particular advices of convivial hygiene, food prohibitions, the way of presenting the wine and the bread, of serving the meat, etc, etc...
"Child you must not load yourself
So much of the first meat
Several have of order
That others can not lead
Child, if your nes is bad
Do not torch it with your bare hand
From which the meat is held
The fact is villain and shameful".
Superb copy, large margins, finely bound by Lortic.
Skilful restorations in the margins of the leaves, without affecting the text.
Vicar 207. - Baudrier p. 483.
