Agathe Françoise de Lorne (1766-1822) is portrayed here two years before her marriage to Jean-Baptiste Hamon des Roches de Bournay. The clever mix of social status, the model's refined dress and the more rural elements, such as the basket of grapes and flowers, are reminiscent of the portraits painted by Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun. The pose of the woman is also close to that of the Countess of Grammont Caderousse painted by Vigée Le Brun and preserved at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City.
